MAPS FOR ALL Launch 2017

ALP Program Spring 2017

Great news! Dr. Louise E. Loomis is one of the four 2015 Anchor Award Recipients whose accomplishments will be celebrated during the Anchor Awards Ceremony and Dinner, to be held on October 16, 2015 at the 1877 Club, Harry Jack Gray Center from 5PM – 8PM. The Anchor Award is the most prestigious award presented by the University of Hartford Alumni Association. The awards were established to recognize alumni who have distinguished themselves by achieving the highest level of professional and community accomplishments and who possess absolute standards of integrity and character to positively reflect and enhance the prestige of The University of Hartford.

FAMILY LIFE EDUCATION 2015 GALA

Family Life Education will host their Annual Gala 2015 and the theme is "Inspiring Wellness, One Child At A Time". This year's gala honoree is Dr. Louise E. Loomis and we will be celebrating her longtime commitment to education. She will also be honored by officially renaming the Children's Wellness Center to The Louise Earle Loomis Children's Wellness Center. This special event will be held on September 26, 2015, beginning at 5:30PM - 11:30PM and held at the Hartford Marriott Downtown, 200 Columbus Blvd, Hartford, CT.

NIMBLE THINKING WORKSHOP

Dr. Louise E. Loomis will be presenting a NIMBLE THINKING workshop at the Creative Problem Solving Institute (CPSI) 2015 for the 61st Annual International Creative Education Foundation Conference scheduled for June 17-21, 2015 in Buffalo, NY. This month we are offering (1) FREE 20-Minute Creative Problem Solving (CPS) Session exclusively for tenants here at 56 Arbor Street. You’re invited to the ThinkWell Center to learn CPS, a method for using your own creative thinking to readily solve problems* in both your professional and personal lives. Please note that all sessions are by appointment only. So, schedule your free CPS session today, by calling 860-232-0891 or please stop by our Suite #302.

BRAIN AWARENESS WEEK 2015   MARCH 16-22, 2015

Dr. Louise Loomis a member of the Duncaster Retirement Committee helped assist in organizing a variety of Brain Awareness Week events held this past week March 15 - 20, 2015. This year’s events began with a great kickoff workshop entitled, “Your Creative Brain” and was presented by Dr. Doris Shallcross. There week's dinner menus offered Brain Healthy eating choices and daily announcements included brain-wise quotations. "Food for Thought" quotations also served as decor in the dining areas. Residents had the opportunity to also Yoga, Tai Chi and fitness sessions conducted that stressed the brain benefits derived from physical exercise. Brain Stations which consisted of such materials as puzzles and vintage magazines, which were a real "trip down memory lane". They changed daily and were found scattered throughout the facility specifically outside the dining rooms and the mail room. Residents had the chance to enjoy "Brainy Bits", which are tips for brain health. Lastly, an afternoon of creative thinking activities ended the week.

DR. LOUISE LOOMIS HONORED WITH NAMING OF CHILDREN'S CENTER

A very special event was held to celebrate the naming the Louise Earle Loomis Children's Center, an extended program of the Family Life Education Center.designed to address the development of the "whole child". This event was held on Tuesday, December 9, 2014 at the Town and County Club in Hartford, CT. THE COGNITIVE SIX: A BRAIN-BASED APPROACH TO 21ST CENTURY LEARNING SKILLS

This year Dr. Louise Loomis will be presenting this workshop at CPSI ’60 - Extending Track Education Sessions for the Creative Education Foundation Conference, June 18 – 22, 2014 in Buffalo, NY. Participants will have the opportunity to:  Identify and practice the Cognitive Six (classification is one); connect the Cognitive Six to the 21st Century learning skills; and analyze the CPS process for the Cognitive Six. The Cognitive Six refers to the skills our brain uses naturally for organizing information. Practice of the Six develops the 21st Century learning skills of Creativity, Critical Thinking, Collaboration, and Communication.

exploring creativity: a hands-on creative activity

As part of the Open Studios Hartford Weekend on November 16 & 17, 2013, ThinkWell Center held a treasure hunt that gave participants the chance to discover the wealth of  creativity that lies within each of us. This adventure began with participants to first receive a map and visit various organizations throughout the building of 56 Arbor Street, where they could then find activities that would draw out their creativity and sharpen their thinking. Finally participants were led to their final destination here at the ThinkWell Center LLC, to ask for more information, receive answers to the puzzles and activities they experienced along their way, and to be awarded prizes for participating. They also contributed to a community art wall and most of all find out how Dr. Lou could help them to better utilize the potential of the abundance of 100 billion brain cells. What a great adventure this event was.

Brain awareness week 2013   March 11-17, 2013

Brain Awareness Week is back, and this year’s week long celebration is full of various lectures and programs scheduled for the Duncaster Retirement Community , which will be led by Dr. Louise Loomis. There will also be a lecture on "Aging Well" presented by Robert McCartney, M.D. Followed by a presentation on the "Keys to Cognitive Fitness" presented by guest speaker Ken Steller.

CREATIVE JOURNAL WORKSHOP

Come and enjoy a fun workshop on learning about combining writing and drawing through the journaling process. It is a reflective and interpretive activity useful for understanding life events and, for assisting in decision-making, and self understanding. ThinkWell is offering (2) introductory workshops to get your New Year off to a great start. 

Dates: Saturday, January 19, 2013 at 10:00AM - 12:00PM and Wednesday, January 23, 2013 at 5:30PM - 7:30PM.

maps for all: A 21st century initiative to promote global competency

The Connecticut Council For The Social Studies 2012 Fall Conference was held October 26, 2012 at Central Connecticut State University. This conference theme was "Social Studies at the Core: Using Common Core State Standards to Improve Instruction.Dr. Louise Loomis presented a workshop session on the Maps For All: A 21st Century Intiative to Promote Global Competency, participants had the opportunity to explore ways in which schooling could address the need to increase awareness of political geography in the general public and to create a public environment that reflects a national awareness of its global citizenship.

Brain Awareness Week 2012    March 12-18, 2012  

On Monday, March 13, 2012 in the Meeting Room, Dana brain pencils & magazines from the 50's - 80's greeted residents. Dr. Louise Loomis presided, explained the purpose of Brain Awareness Week (BAW), described the Dana Foundation, summarized the history of brain research, and recognized the work of Connecticut native Nobel Laureate, Roger Sperry. Participants enjoyed the magazines & shared their reflections; while a puzzle activity quickly engaged the audience until the end of the meeting. Residents were encouraged to take the magazines & received a copy of Memory and Aging.

Then on Tuesday, March 14, 2012 two committee members presented at the Duncaster Residents' Association meeting using two puzzles involving new ways of thinking. On Wednesday, March 15, 2012 at a well-attended Coffee Hour, Dr. Henry Morgan, gerontologist, spoke on “The Mystery of Brain Development As We Age”. Lastly a puzzle social was held on Friday, March 17, 2012 to close out Brain Awareness Week.

Dr. Louise Loomis presented "Exploring Thinking & Learning" : A Staff Professional Development Program for the Wheeler Clinic Community Support for Families Staff. This program was presented in (3) sessions. Dates: June 28, 2012; July 13, 2012 and July 27, 2012.

On April 4, 2012 Dr. Louise Loomis presented an hour long concurrent session about the Maps For All: A 21st Century Intiative, during the 43rd NERC Conference (Northeast Regional Conference on Social Studies) held in Sturbridge, Massachusetts. This presentation is a project designed to increase the awareness of political geography in the general public environment that reflects a national awareness of its global citizenship.
