About Louise Loomis, Ed.D.

Louise Loomis, Ed.D. founded ThinkWell Center LLC in 2011. She began her career as a science teacher in Cleveland, Ohio and continued teaching in Hartford, Connecticut. When she moved to Hartford, she learned of the annual Creative Problem Solving Institute (CPSI) and spent many years attending its annual conferences; eventually becoming one of its presenters. At CPSI Lou became acquainted with Doris Shallcross, professor of the Creativity Program at the Amherst campus of the University of Massachusetts. She enrolled in Dr. Shallcross' program and led to her earning a Doctorate in 1994.

In 1989, Dr. Lou founded Hartford Critical and Creative Thinking Center which offered courses in Critical and Creative Thinking and Problem Solving. It later became the New England Cognitive Center under the leadership of Patti Said. At the same time, when a focus on education for women was developed as the LEAD Program (currently known as Women's Advancement Initiative at the University of Hartford) by Executive Director, Amy Barzach. Lou started teaching the same at Hartford College for Women until the college closed. She has presented hundreds of programs to students, educators, corporations and nonprofit organizations.

Recent programs by Louise Loomis have included:

  • Creative Wisdom
  • Building Brain Power
  • Memory Fact and Fun
  • Grandparents Raising Grandchildren: Making the Most of the Second Time Around
  • Family Life Education at Its Best®
  • Nimble Thinking, published in 2010, is Dr. Loomis’ first publication for the general reader.
  • The Cognitive Six: AGuide to Teaching Thinking, published in 2017

Dr. Lou has five children and nine grandchildren.  In her spare time, she travels with some or even all of them to both exotic and familiar locations. Her many journeys have inspired a belief in the importance of maps in public places and a Maps for All Project.

After teaching people to “think well” for more than 35 years, Dr. Lou maintains her enthusiasm for the power of thinking about thinking and believes that it is both transformative and stress-reducing.
